My name is Vimala Vita and I am a Jakarta-based Jewelry Artist.
When our culture is focused on trends and disposable, I try to make art jewelry intended to be worn for years instead of months. I want the wearer to think of my jewelry as more than a pair of earrings or necklaces, but as a small work of art. I hope to create a relationship between my work and the wearer through clean lines and pleasing forms.
My current work is very much about wire, gemstones, and the metal itself; its color, malleability, and form. As a self-taught jeweler, my approach is unconventional in-process and begins by working directly with materials and begins building without help from a sketched design. I primarily work in copper and sterling silver and use oxidation and matte finishes on many of my jewelry to enhance the layers and details I create through wire weaving, forming, hammering, riveting, and soldering. Simple forms such as circles, ovals, triangles, and squares repeat themselves within this body of work as they build upon each other, creating a familiar, original, and timeless feeling.
I draw inspiration from simple forms found in nature, architecture, primitive ethnic forms, indigenous crafts, and old-world processes. I am so lucky to be able to work as an independent jewelry artist. My work is in galleries and online shops throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
